What is herringbone parquet?
Herringbone parquet is a real wood parquet floor in which the planks are laid in a V-shaped pattern, like the bones of a fish. It’s one of the oldest and most recognisable parquet patterns, with a chic, classic look that works in both historic and sleek modern interiors. Alongside classic herringbone there’s also the Hungarian point (chevron), where the planks are cut at an angle so they meet in a continuous point, for an even more refined result.

Herringbone or Hungarian point (chevron)?
Both are V-patterns, but the difference is in the join. In classic herringbone, rectangular planks are laid at right angles so the end of one plank meets the side of the next. In Hungarian point (chevron), the planks are cut at an angle so they meet in a perfectly continuous, straight point, which looks calmer and more refined. Herringbone is more classic and a little more affordable, chevron is more exclusive and more demanding to lay.
What to keep in mind with herringbone parquet
Herringbone is a premium pattern, and you notice that in the installation. A herringbone floor is almost always glued down and laid by a professional: the sizing, the right-angle or angled join and the alignment are unforgiving, so this isn’t really a DIY job.
