Parquet and underfloor heating: what matters
Not every parquet is suitable for underfloor heating. Solid parquet moves too much with temperature changes and can shrink, expand or crack. Engineered parquet (multilayer), by contrast, is specially built to stay stable: its cross-layered construction absorbs the stresses, so the floor transfers heat evenly without deforming. Always choose a model that’s explicitly rated for underfloor heating, and keep in mind the thermal resistance (Rc value) of the whole floor build-up: wood insulates more than tile or PVC, so a thin wear layer and a heat-conductive underlay deliver the best efficiency.
The benefits of parquet on underfloor heating
- Engineered parquet stays dimensionally stable through temperature swings
- Real wood, warm and pleasant underfoot
- Transfers heat evenly without moving
- Available in click (floating) and glued
- Sandable and long-lasting, depending on the wear layer thickness
- Adds character and value to your home
Glued or floating on underfloor heating?
Both are possible, but there’s a difference in efficiency. Glued parquet is in full contact with the screed and transfers heat fastest and most evenly. Floating click parquet rests on an underlay, which creates a small insulating air layer. That works fine, but in that case choose a thin, heat-conductive underlay rated for underfloor heating so you don’t lose performance. For more on the installation method, see our click parquet page.
How to heat it correctly
A wood floor needs a gradual heating protocol. Raise the temperature in steps after installation and keep the floor surface temperature to around 27°C. Maintain indoor humidity between 45 and 60%: air that’s too dry in winter makes wood shrink and can cause gaps or splits. A hygrometer and, if needed, a humidifier help keep your floor in top condition.
